Oconee Youth Playhouse (OYP) is set to present six performances of The Prince of Egypt, the acclaimed stage musical based on DreamWorks’ 1998 animated film, from July 24–26 and July 31–August 2 at the Oconee Youth Theater in Watkinsville. Marking the organization’s 75th production, the musical tells the biblical story of Moses and his journey from Egyptian prince to the leader who frees the Hebrew people from slavery.The production features a cast of 63 young performers, ranging from elementary school students to college-aged actors.
Rising North Oconee High School junior Drew Wrinkle stars as Moses, while Nate St. Onge, an incoming musical theatre student at Elon University, takes on the role of Ramses. Additional featured performances include Brooke Costigan, Rylen Ward, Marlo Hardin, and Olia Mogollon in key roles. The musical features music by acclaimed composer Stephen Schwartz, including the Academy Award-winning song “When You Believe.”Co-directed by Jordan Powers and Terra Hannon, the production has been described as OYP’s most ambitious undertaking to date due to its demanding score and large-scale choreography.
Supported by musical director Rachel Townes, stage manager and set designer Tenley Moretti, and costume coordinator Hollie Smith, the creative team has spent months bringing the epic production to life. Performances begin at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with 3 p.m. Sunday matinees. Due to its mature themes, parents are encouraged to consider the content before attending with younger children.
